Matteo Massagrande was born in 1959 in Padua, Italy. He is highly influenced by 19th century Italian realism. Since 1973, he has exhibited his works in many public and private collections around the world. He lives and works in Padua, Italy and Hayoş, Hungary, and the influence of both places on his works is quite clear. His fascinating and mysterious paintings show the interior spaces of architecture with views to the exterior spaces, the interior spaces are uninhabited, decaying and possibly abandoned. Color and light in his works follow the Venetian tradition and with their quiet quality often without human subjects in the foreground along with lush and fertile backgrounds, they show a dialogue between the past and the present. There is a tension in these seemingly calm and controlled paintings. His works bring melancholic and optimistic feelings at the same time and show the past human presence in the frame and at the same time draw the viewer's eye to rich interior spaces.
