    Lalo de Almeida (b. 1970) is a photographer based in São Paulo, Brazil. Having studied photography at the Instituto Europeo di Design in Milan, Italy, he began working as a photojournalist for small agencies covering daily news. Upon returning to Brazil, he joined the newspaper Folha de São Paulo where he worked for 30 years. From 2010, de Almeida began producing short video documentaries and multimedia narratives creating a series of internationally awarded projects including A World of Walls, The Battle of Belo Monte and The Climate Crisis, among others. In 2021, de Almeida was awarded the Ibero-American Photographer of the Year by the POY Latam (Pictures of the Year Latam). In the same year, he was a recipient of the Eugene Smith Grant In Humanistic Photography for his work Amazonian Dystopia, documenting the predatory model of occupation of the largest tropical forest on the planet over the last 10 years. He has been represented by Panos Pictures since 2020.
